Once comfortable with the altitude the group will walk up to Everest ABC and up the glacier, and perhaps on to the glacier below the North Col. Also recommended is a hike across the almost level East Rongbuk Glacier to the Raphu La from where there is a good view of the route up Lhakpa Ri. Time is allowed for practicing our rope skills.
21. Lhakpa Ri Summit day (7045) & return to ABC It will be an early start from ABC setting off across the glacier. There are a few crevasses and the going is easy until the slopes leading up to the ridge to the north of the summit. Most of the route is about 20 - 30 degrees, however it is a long, hard day. The views and the whole surroundings are well worth it! The team be in roped groups as the angle does not warrant the use of fixed ropes. The snow slope leads to the gently angled north ridge, on the other side of which is the Kharta Glacier where Mallory climbed to get his first view of the east side of Everest. This ridge leads to the summit of Lhakpa Ri. The views of Everest just across the glacier will be stunning and there is also Makalu to the south and numerous other peaks including Cho Oyu. We return to ABC by the same route.
