Khumbu Challenge
On arrival in Kathmandu we ensure enough time to acclimatise, purchase equipment and sightsee before flying to Lukla in the mountains. The trek starts with further acclimatisation in Namche Bazaar, the centre of the Sherpa community, before moving onto the first challenge. This involves crossing the relatively newly opened Renjo Pass (5,345 metres). From here you will continue to the beautiful Gokyo lakes. After resting in Tangnak, the next challenge is the Chola Pass (5330m) and from there to Kalapathar and Everest Base Camp. The views are stunning and include the mountains of Lhotse, Nuptse and Ama Dablam as well as Everest itself, of course. After further time to rest, you will then cross the Khongma La Pass (5,500 metres) as you make your way to Island Peak (6,189 metres).
Island Peak is one of the more popular trekking peaks in Nepal's Everest region and involves some climbing with crampons, ice axe and areas where the group is roped. There will be very experienced guides accompanying the group to assist as necessary. Previous experience is preferable and a good level of fitness is essential. Island Peak is a truly exhilarating climb with breathtaking scenery and with good weather it is not unusual for the whole group to reach the summit.
This trek provides a number of challenges in the most famous climbing area of the world. The superb scenery along this fabulous route will make it an experience of a lifetime.
