Island Peak and Nangpa La Trek

Trekking group

Island Peak is one of the more popular trekking peaks in Nepal’s Everest region and is 6,189 metres high. Nangpa La is a remote high pass at 5,176 metres only recently made available to visit due to its close proximity to the Tibetan border.

On arrival in Kathmandu we allow time to acclimatise, purchase equipment and sightsee before flying to Lukla in the mountains. The trek takes you through Namche Bazaar, the heart of the Sherpa community, to Tengboche and the famous Buddhist monastery and then on to the Peak. The whole area is incredibly beautiful and the mountain views include Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam and Everest itself.

Island Peak involves some climbing with crampons, ice axe and areas where the group is roped.   There will be very experienced guides accompanying the group to assist as necessary. Previous experience is preferable and a good level of fitness is essential. Island Peak is a truly exhilarating climb with breathtaking scenery and with good weather, it is not unusual for the whole group to reach the summit.

After Island Peak we trek to Nangpa La, passing through the Nangpa Valley and a number of remote and traditional villages towards the Tibetan border. You will likely encounter Tibetan people along the way and the views in this stunning area will include Cho Oyu, the sixth highest mountain in the world.

This trek provides a challenge, superb scenery and a great insight into the people and their lifestyle in the Himalayas.
