The flight to Lukla is about 45 minutes and is usually first thing in the morning. The flight will allow you stunning views of the vast Himalayan mountain range. On arrival in Lukla you will have a relaxed couple of hours before beginning the first stage of the trek.
Day 5. Chutenka
Trek to the village of Chutenka at a steady pace allowing for acclimatisation.
Day 6. Zatrawa (4400m)
Trekking in to the mountain is vital time to acclimatise and the pace will be slow to ensure a steady accent and maximise the time for the acclimatisation process. Zatrawa is well over 4000 metres so the altitude will be apparent at this stage.
Day 7. Kote (3600m)
Coming down to a lower altitude for a night or two also assists the body to adjust.
Day 8. Draknak
Day 9. Draknak – acclimatisation day
Today you may take an optional short walk to gain altitude and return to Draknak at night. This is a rest day to allow time to further acclimatise and to rest in preparation for the peak.
Day 10. Khare (5100m)
Trekking steadily up to over 5000 metres
Day 11. Mera Col (5200m)
Day 12. High camp
It is quite a tough walk to high camp however it gives a great starting place for climbing the peak the next day
Day 13. Khare – climb peak (6476m)
Today you will climb to the summit of Mera Peak. The route starts gradually and much will depend on snow and general weather conditions. The central peak appears above the head of a wide glacier flanked by two ridges. You will climb the centre of this over open snowfields. The route then swings south-east, skirting below and to the east of the left-hand ridge before turning back rightwards towards the main summit ridge of Mera. Mera actually has three summits; the highest is our objective. We reach this by following a classic snow-ridge to just below the final wall that leads to the top. This short steep snow slope is easily climbed and requires a big effort in this last 50 metres. The magnificent panorama from the top is well worth the push once you are there. You will then descend by the same route back to the campsite below the Mera La.
Day 14. Draknak
Day 15. Shershong
Day 16. Zatra La (4580m)
The direct route back to Lukla can be comfortably achieved in 4 days. It crosses the exciting Zatrwa La pass (4,600m) before descending steeply into the Dudh Kosi valley and to Lukla. The pass gives plenty of opportunities for photographing the dramatic peaks around Mera. On arrival in Lukla you can relax, visit tea shops and bars, and prepare for tomorrow's flight to Kathmandu.
Day 17. Lukla
From Lukla you will board the 45 minute flight back to the city of Kathmandu. Arriving back to the midst of a bustling city may feel a little strange after the peace and slower pace of the rural mountains of Nepal.
Day 18. Arrive Kathmandu
Today is a rest day to relax, sight see, shop and whatever else you wish to do before your return journey home the next day.
