HELAMBU WALK
DUKE OF EDINBURGH’S EXPEDITION
DESCRIPTION OF WALK:
On arrival in Kathmandu time is allowed to relax following the
journey, to explore the abundance of places to see and visit of
cultural interest or simply to wander around, shop and take in
the atmosphere. The local people are friendly and Kathmandu has
a lively fun atmosphere that is enjoyable to be a part of.
The trek in the Helambu region starts with a short drive north
from Kathmandu to Sundarijal. There are numerous trails to
follow in this region so the young people can safely devise
their route from local maps. The area is versatile so there is
also flexibility on the number of days needed to complete a
trek. This area will allow the group to travel through fir and
rhododendron forests, flower meadows and along side streams. The
walk is suitable for moderate walkers as it
does not reach
heights to warrant concern over the altitude for most participants. Melamchigaon and Tarkeghyang are the principle
villages of this area and together with the Melamchi river and
the lakes at Tarkeghyang the terrain gives a wonderful variety.
There are many tea houses along the route so giving the option
to camp or stay in lodges or a mixture of both.
Later time is allowed back in Kathmandu to participate in a
charity project as an opportunity to contribute to the lives of
the local people. The project is planned to be a part of the
Rokpa international humanitarian organisation that supports
homeless, educational and health projects or similar.
