GANDEN TO SAMYE TREK - TIBET
DUKE OF EDINBURGH EXPEDITION
DESCRIPTION OF TREK:
On arrival in Kathmandu, Nepal there is a
day and two nights to take in this fascinating city with an
optional sight seeing tour of some historic areas of Kathmandu
and its temples.
There follows a short flight to Lhasa in Tibet where time is
spent exploring the historical centre of the Tibetan Buddhists.
There will be the opportunity to visit Potala Palace and
Norbulinka the former home and summer palace of the Dalai Lama
as well as the Barkhor markets.
This is essential acclimatisation time for the group in
preparation for the expedition ahead.
From Lhasa there is a drive to Nam tso Lake the second largest
salt water lake in the country, a beautiful turquoise colour and
surrounded by fabulous views of the nearby mountains. From here
the expedition from Ganden to the Samye monastery begins. This
will take several days and is in altitude so time will need to
be taken to acclimatise along the way. The expedition is in a
stunning area of Tibet with a variety of terrain - valleys,
rivers, lakes, forest and stunning mountain views. Along the way
you are likely to encounter the people of Tibet from herders to
villagers to monks, they are a wonderful race and an inspiration
to experience due to the unmistakable influence of the Tibetan
Buddhist culture.
Later time is allowed back in Kathmandu to participate in a
charity project as an opportunity to contribute to the lives of
the local people. The project is planned to be a part of the
Rokpa international humanitarian organisation that supports
homeless, educational and health projects or similar.
